Born on the 1st of May, 1982 to a Middle class family in the Lagos suburb of Akoka, the young Chukwunonso Onuegbu's (a.k.a Rheymophoebus) interest in literature, developed into a deeper love of poetry and the written word. Like most of his peers, he was also intrigued by the explosion of Rap as an art form and the universality of its appeal was a strong pull factor. The music of Rap artistes like Busta Rhymes, Dead Prez, M.O.P., Dilated Peoples and the Wu tang Clan made a very telling impression and he began to see the linkages between Poetry and Rap. With hit tracks like Tym Na Mony, Face 2 D Sky and Buga rap, Rheymo has been able to infuse his own unique style of elegant, insightful rhymes with the vivacious tempo and hard hitting baselines that are the hallmarks of the Nigerian Rap scene. His acute sense of musical history and studying of the greats of the Nigerian music scene also mean that he can draw quite seamlessly from influences as varied as Fela Anikulapo Kuti and the late Tu Pac Shakur. Perhaps what sets Big Rheymo, as heâs affectionately called by his legion of friends and admirers apart is his combination of slick, poetic rhymes and a soulful drawl of a voice. The range of subjects he tackles with his Songs (Everything from the prevalence of prostitution in our cities as well as abject poverty to the need for the youth to take more responsibility for their actions) means that he doesnât fall into the trap of the one subject artistes that are a constant feature of the musical scene these days. Rheymo is definitely an artiste to watch out for and his soon to be released debut album â âRheymo fit bustâ is a must have; so stay tunedâ¦
